With a passion for extravagance, world-famous shopping and plenty of sunshine, it’s no wonder the glamorous city of Dubai has emerged as a favourite Middle Eastern luxury destination. Just a five-hour flight from Europe, there are some amazing hotels in Dubai and the city knows how to have fun. It is more laid-back than many of its neighbours, and goes all out to impress by offering some unusual tourist experiences. Here’s our pick of some of the most exciting things to do in Dubai Dune-bashing adventures Perhaps one of the most enjoyable things to do in the desert surrounding Dubai is dune-bashing, which involves tackling the huge desert sand dunes in a rugged 4×4 vehicle. Many companies offer whole ‘desert safari experiences’ combining riding the sand dunes along with other activities such as camel riding, a barbecue supper, and perhaps some belly-dancing entertainment. The excursions are completely geared towards tourists and don’t offer any kind of authentic cultural desert experience, but they are a lot of fun. Skiing
Skiing isn’t the first activity that springs to mind when you think of sizzling Dubai, but the city is home to an indoor snow centre of epic proportions. While indoor ski centres are hardly unique to Dubai, the one based at the Mall of the Emirates is the world’s largest and boasts the only indoor black ski run. Stepping from desert heat into icy temperatures of around -1º or -2º is a shock to the system, but once you’ve acclimatised there’s some great skiing to be had on real snow.
Sand-skiing If you’d rather ski outdoors and feel the sun on your face, Dubai has its very own take on the sport. Sand skiing uses special skis but the concept is the same as its winter sports equivalent, and you can get up quite a speed on the higher dunes. It’s all great fun until you have to climb back uphill again, because unlike at Alpine ski resorts the Dubai desert doesn’t offer the luxury of a ski lift
F1 racing For a fun, adrenalin-fuelled day out, Dubai Autodrome has a Race and Drive Centre which will bring out the champion in any frustrated F1 driver. Part with your cash and you get to climb into a high performance racing car, hear the roar of the engine, and race on a real track.
