I need a holiday, gimme a break!

AUSSIES kind of suck at taking holidays. According to Roy Morgan Research, our annual leave stockpile currently totals 129 million days.

Perhaps were afraid to take a vacation. After all, holidays require a lot of planning. And, often, theyre not all theyre cracked up to be.

But it doesnt have to be the case.

Even if your holiday is simply staying home looking after children, you can still have fun.

Remember too that holidays are there for a reason – to give you a physical and mental break from work.

Taking mini-breaks throughout the year – three or four days here and there – as well as a longer break can help us recharge, says motivational speaker Mark McKeon, author of Get in the Go Zone.

Hike Patagonia’s Torres del Paine

Patagonia looks like “Alaska on steroids,” my kids remarked.

My family came over winter break to backpack the 87-mile Paine Circuit. It circles the Paine massif of 10,000ft (3,200m) peaks and edges a 240-mile-long glacier before climbing to a wind-tunnel pass and looping back around. Its considered one of the top treks in the world.

Tips: – Plan early – Purchase supplies in Puerto Natales (limited goods available inside the park) – Pack for inclement, cold weather, even in summer

At the Valle de Frances, we stood atop a ridge surrounded by sheer rock pinnacles spires of chiseled stone emerging from the clouds, their tops frosted in snow, and trailing robes of glaciers at their feet. Ice

Double-duty Tommy Pannier Bag From Property Of…

We love multi-functional products on this travel gear blog, so Ive been pretty excited about this Tommy Pannier bag, which is good as a briefcase, a messenger bag, or a bike bag.

The bike is where the pannier part comes in. You hook this over a back tire rack and clip it in with the Velcro straps. Youve then got five different pockets to utilize, from two small ones on the outside to several that can hold a laptop or tablet. (One is padded.) All have heavy-duty zippers with leather pulls, the three outer ones covered by a flap.

Mystique of a tropical idyll

Spectacular sunset over Borneo.

Arriving at a holiday destination at night has a certain mystique. Add a balmy tropical setting, a boat ride plus an exotic island to the mix and the magic ramps up.

But let’s backtrack a bit. I had flown from Perth to Kuala Lumpur a few days before for some big-city indulgences – a pampered stay at the grand J. W. Marriott Hotel along with some sightseeing and shopping – and was ready for a change of place and pace. Forward to Gaya Island Resort, a newly-opened property in the YTL Hotels international collection of luxury boutique accommodation.

To get to the resort from Kuala Lumpur requires a short flight to Kota Kinabalu, in the state of Sabah, and a sea transfer.

British wheel deal confounds the naysayers

WITH a self-drive writing trip on the slate that would take us from Heathrow to Englands Cotswolds, across to Wales to ride their famed Little Trains, back into England for Staffordshires Trentham Monkey Forest, and down to Heathrow again, mates in the know told us wed need a good 10 days to comfortably meet our goals.

But we had just half that, and were heading into back-blocks we either knew nothing about, or had last driven over a quarter-century ago.

Cut your itinerary in half, suggested one doomsayer. Re-write it entirely, suggested another. Talk to coach companies, suggested yet others.

But the car had been booked and the hotels pre-paid.
