Images from Beijing

A little girl takes photographs at the Forbidden City / Picture: Gemma Nisbet

“One… two… OK!” We cosy up with our new friends, a 60-something Chinese couple, and smile for the camera as their son counts down to snapping our picture.

It’s evening and we’re in Beijing, wandering the maze of narrow alleyways, or hutongs, near the city centre. And quite inadvertently, we — two young women with short brown hair and glasses — are causing a bit of a stir.

Only 10 minutes earlier, we were approached by a gaggle of schoolgirls who indicated their desire to pose for photos with us, cooing “beeeautiful, beeeautiful”, all the while.

I’m surprised that we’re considered so novel in this metropolis of more than 20 million, where western expats aren’t exactly rare. But a visit to Beijing, it

Greek Islands the perfect winter escape for Aussies

TAKE me to the Greek islands. This photo was taken on Lesbos, but any Greek island will do.

They are all beautiful in the summer with their brown hills, small bays, clear, clean water, and white-washed villas.

Take me down to the harbour when the fishermen come in with their catch and hang their octopus out to dry in the sun.

Then take me to a taverna by the waters edge and let me eat freshly caught chargrilled octopus.

Use an ATM, I advised. It’s the easiest way to get a good exchange rate without getting whacked with a big fee.

He declined, saying he was afraid of identity theft. Understandable but there are ways to minimize exposure. I use a no-fee debit card linked to a separate checking account in which I keep only enough to cover my trip plus some online bill payments. And I

Pacsafe Toursafe 21 Luggage

It would be nice to trust everyone you encounter on the road, but sometimes you need to keep your gear secure from prying hands. The Pacsafe Toursafe 21 Luggage combines a handful of anti-theft features for a trusty wheeled carry-on bag that won’t give up its contents easily.

The suitcase is mostly soft-sided, except for a hard back, which makes it less difficult to fit in those overheard bins. While Pacsafe makes 25- and 29-inch versions of this bag, it’s the 21-inch suitcase that’s fit to carry on. Add the side-mounted wheels and the single aluminum tube handle, and it’s pretty easy to take for a spin through the airport. Those w

Feasting in Hong Kong

Posto Pubblico restaurant in Elgin Street, Soho / Picture: Stephen Scourfield

In Cantonese, “Hong Kong” means “fragrant harbour”. In modern vernacular it means “great shopping and dining”. And both in preparation for, and recuperating from, mauling the malls, visitors need fuel.

My goodness, the food in Hong Kong . .
